The UL 1004-8:2018 standard is a supplementary standard to the UL 1004-1 standard for rotating electrical machines. It specifically applies to squirrel cage polyphase induction motors that are designed for use with variable voltage and variable frequency controls, commonly known as inverters.

The purpose of this standard is to evaluate the suitability of these motors for normal use when powered by an inverter supply within the manufacturer's declared range of operating conditions. It outlines the requirements and tests that these motors must meet to ensure their safe and reliable operation.

However, it's important to note that this standard does not address the efficacy of motor overtemperature protection under abnormal conditions, the motor's operation under unusual service conditions as described in NEMA MG-1, or the operation of the motor in hazardous (Classified) locations. These aspects are not within the scope of UL 1004-8:2018.
