Standard EN SampleStandard for Burglary-Resistant Electric Locking Mechanisms
Also Known As:
The UL 1034:2020 standard specifies the requirements for the construction, performance, and operation of electric locking mechanisms used for securing and releasing doors. This includes related devices such as control units, control switches, and power supplies.
The standard defines the three key elements used to determine the effectiveness of a burglary-resistant electric locking mechanism: static strength, dynamic strength, and endurance. Static strength is rated at either 500 pounds-force, 1000 pounds-force, or 1500 pounds-force. Dynamic strength is rated at 33 foot-pounds-force, 50 foot-pounds-force, or 70 foot-pounds-force. Endurance is rated at either 100,000 or 250,000 cycles.
The standard emphasizes that a burglary-resistant electric locking mechanism should be used in conjunction with an access control system or a manual-release mechanism to ensure emergency egress. It must not interfere with the ability to evacuate through the controlled door or opening cover, or it should have a release mechanism that can be activated as required by the authority having jurisdiction.
It is important to note that the standard does not address the fire-retardant classification of a door and releasing-device assembly. Additionally, any product that deviates from the requirements of this standard, and poses a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury, must undergo additional evaluations to maintain the intended level of safety. Any conflicts or inconsistencies with the specific requirements of this standard render a product non-compliant, and revisions to the standard must follow the established methods for development, revision, and implementation.
