Standard for Appliance Wiring Material

SKU194995144 Published by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. UL Publication Date2022-01-20 Pages CountPages88

The UL 758:2022 standard outlines the requirements for various types of appliance wiring materials. It covers single insulated conductors, multi-conductor cables, optical fibers, individual insulated conductors, and fiber optic members used as components in multi-conductor cables.

The standard specifies that the covered appliance wiring materials are intended for use as factory-installed wiring within the enclosures of appliances and other equipment (internal wiring), as well as external interconnecting cables for appliances (external wiring), or as components in multi-conductor cables that will be further processed.

It is important to note that the standard does not cover any wire, cable, or cord types that are already addressed in the National Electrical Code (NEC, NFPA 70). These wiring materials are not intended for installation in buildings or structures, unless their use is specified in the installation instructions of the end-product they are designed for.

The UL 758:2022 standard also specifies the operating temperature and voltage ratings for the covered appliance wiring materials. The operating temperature ranges from a minimum of 60°C (140°F) for dry conditions, and the voltage ratings start from a minimum of 30 volts. The conductor size ranges from 50 AWG to 2000 kcmil. Additionally, the standard covers appliance wiring materials that consist entirely of optical fiber members or a combination of electrical conductors and optical fiber members.

However, it is important to note that the standard does not cover the optical performance of any optical-fiber member or group of such members. Furthermore, constructions utilizing flat, insulated conductors that are not laid parallel are not covered by this standard, as these products have their requirements outlined in the Standard for Flexible Materials Interconnect Constructions (UL 796F).

The performance evaluation of the semi-conductive polymeric layer described in the standard is not covered by UL 758:2022. The standard also establishes guidelines for the evaluation of special constructions that, due to their specific end product use, are not required to meet all the requirements for general construction AWM.

Ultimately, the final acceptance of Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) is dependent on its use in complete equipment that complies with the applicable standards for such equipment.
