Standard for Explosion-Proof and Dust-Ignition-Proof Electrical Equipment for Use in Hazardous (Classified) Locations
Also Known As:
UL 1203:2021 is a standard that provides requirements for explosion-proof and dust-ignition-proof electrical equipment intended for use in hazardous (classified) locations. These hazardous locations are categorized as Class I, Division 1 (Groups A, B, C, and D) and Class II, Division 1 (Groups E, F, and G), in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70).
The standard also covers explosion-proof electrical equipment suitable for installation and use in Class I, Zone 1 (Groups IIA, IIB, and IIC) hazardous locations, as well as dust-ignitionproof equipment for use in Zone 20, 21, and 22 locations.
Additionally, the standard addresses explosion-proof electrical equipment that has been investigated for use in specific gas or vapor atmospheres with or without additional Class I Groups.
It should be noted that this standard does not cover equipment intended for use in hazardous locations that are covered by separate standards.
The equipment covered by UL 1203:2021 is required to meet specific atmospheric conditions, including a minimum ambient temperature of minus 60°C (minus 76°F), an oxygen concentration not exceeding 21 percent by volume, and a nominal barometric pressure of one atmosphere.
Furthermore, the equipment must also comply with the relevant requirements for similar equipment used in ordinary unclassified locations.
