Standard for Battery Chargers for Charging Engine-Starter Batteries
Also Known As:
The UL 1236:2021 standard sets forth the requirements for battery chargers that are used to charge lead-acid engine-starter batteries and other starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) type batteries within the rating of 600 volts or less. These chargers are designed for both household and commercial use and comply with the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70). The standard also covers battery chargers that are intended to be permanently installed on boats.
It's important to note that this standard does not cover certain types of battery chargers. These include battery chargers used in industrial applications, which are covered by UL 1564 (Standard for Industrial Battery Chargers). Battery charger systems used in electric vehicle applications are covered by UL 2202 (Standard for Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging System Equipment). Additionally, battery chargers used with portable tools or household appliances are covered by UL 1012 (Standard for Power Units Other Than Class 2) or UL 1310 (Standard for Class 2 Power Units). Lastly, battery chargers specifically intended for fire protection signaling service are not covered by this standard.
