Standard EN SampleStandard for Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cables
Also Known As:
The UL 719:2021 standard covers the requirements for nonmetallic-sheathed cables. These cables contain 2-4 thermoplastic-insulated circuit conductors, along with a grounding conductor. They are intended for use in accordance with Article 334 and other relevant parts of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70).
There are two types of nonmetallic-sheathed cables described in the standard: Type NMC cable and Type NM cable. Type NMC cable is suitable for use in dry, moist, damp, and corrosive locations. Type NM cable, on the other hand, is designed for use in normally dry locations. Both types of cables have conductors with 90°C insulation and are distinguished by the suffix letter "-B."
Additionally, the standard mentions that a cable designated with the suffix "ST1" (indicating "limited smoke") complies with the test criteria for smoke release and cable damage height specified in the UL 1685 standard, which is the Standard for Vertical-Tray Fire-Propagation and Smoke-Release Test for Electrical and Optical-Fiber Cables.
