Automatic Electrical Controls - Part 2-9: Particular Requirements for Temperature Sensing Controls
Also Known As:
The UL 60730-2-9:2021 standard specifies the requirements for automatic electrical temperature sensing controls used in various equipment applications, including heating, air-conditioning, and building automation control systems. The standard applies to controls using electricity, gas, oil, solid fuel, solar thermal energy, or a combination thereof.
The scope of the standard includes controls used in both commercial and industrial applications, as well as controls intended for use by the public in places like shops, offices, hospitals, and farms. However, it does not apply to temperature sensing controls exclusively used for industrial process applications unless specified in the relevant equipment standard.
The standard covers the inherent safety, operating values, operating times, and operating sequences associated with equipment safety. It also addresses the testing of automatic electrical temperature sensing control devices used in equipment, such as boiler thermostats, fan controls, temperature limiters, and thermal cut-outs. Additionally, it applies to the functional safety of low complexity safety-related temperature sensing controls and systems.
The standard also addresses the electrical safety of temperature sensing controls with non-electrical outputs, such as refrigerant flow and gas controls. It includes requirements for manual controls that are electrically and/or mechanically integrated with automatic temperature sensing controls. However, manual switches that do not form part of an automatic control are covered by IEC 61058-1.
The standard applies to temperature sensing controls powered by AC or DC with a rated voltage not exceeding 690 V AC or 600 V DC. It does not consider the response value of an automatic action if it depends on the method of mounting the control. In cases where the response value is significant for user or environmental protection, the value defined in the appropriate equipment standard or determined by the manufacturer applies.
Additionally, the standard addresses temperature sensing controls incorporating electronic devices, with specific requirements outlined in Annex H. It also covers controls using NTC thermistors or PTC thermistors, with requirements specified in Annex J. There is an additional subclause (1.1.101) that lists specific devices covered by the standard, including thermostats for drip-type coffee makers, self-heating thermal protectors for recessed lighting fixtures, and fan/heat sequencers.
Normative references in the standard include IEC 60216-1:2013 for thermal endurance properties of electrical insulating materials, IEC 60691 for thermal links requirements and application guide, and IEC 60730-2-4 for thermal motor protectors for motor-compressors of hermetic and semi-hermetic type.
