The standard also addresses smoke and fire considerations for the covered cables. It outlines the smoke and flame characteristics that the cables should meet, and specifies the relevant test methods and criteria for compliance.

Additionally, the standard mentions that cables may have electromagnetic shields and can be marked as "shielded". Cables containing optical-fiber members are indicated by the addition of "-OF" to the type letters, and are limited to carrying optical energy that is deemed not hazardous to the human body. The standard clarifies that these cables do not have a metal sheath or armor, which are covered by other UL standards.
