Standard EN SampleStandard for Fire Tests of Window Assemblies
Also Known As:
The UL 9:2020 standard provides guidelines and methods for conducting fire tests on window assemblies. These tests are applicable to various types of window assemblies, including glass block and other light transmitting assemblies, that are used for protecting openings in vertical fire resistive assemblies.
The objective of these tests is to measure the heat flux emitted through the test specimen during a fire exposure and to determine the temperatures on the unexposed surface. The standard emphasizes that these tests do not determine the suitability of window assemblies for continued use after fire exposure. The purpose of the tests is to evaluate the ability of a window or light transmitting assembly to remain in an opening during a predetermined fire exposure.
The standard defines a standard fire exposure, which involves subjecting the specimen to specified temperatures for a specified time period, followed by the application of a standard fire hose stream. It is important to note that the specified exposure may not represent all possible fire conditions, as fire exposure conditions can vary based on factors such as fire loading, ventilation, compartment size and configuration, and heat sink characteristics.
The standard also defines two pressure conditions for controlling the furnace during the fire exposure: positive pressure and neutral pressure conditions. Any variations in construction or test conditions may significantly impact the performance characteristics of the window assembly.
However, it is important to mention that the standard does not provide full information regarding the performance of all window assemblies in walls constructed of materials other than those tested. Additionally, it does not evaluate the window assembly's contribution to the fire hazard by generating smoke, toxic gases, or other combustion products, nor does it measure the control or limitation of smoke or combustion product passage through the assembly.
