Switches for Appliances - Part 1: General Requirements
Also Known As:
The UL 61058-1:2021 standard specifies the requirements for switches used in appliances and similar equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 480 V and a rated current not exceeding 63 A. These switches are designed to be operated by a person via an actuating member, through indirect actuation, or by an actuating sensing unit. The transmission of signals between the actuating member or sensing unit and the switch can be done using various methods, including optical, acoustic, thermal, electrical, or other relevant connections.
This standard also covers switches for appliances with additional control functions that are regulated by electronic circuits and devices necessary for the intended and correct operation of the switch. It applies to the circuitry evaluated together with the switch for the switching function. However, it does not apply to devices that fall under IEC 60669 (Switches for household and similar fixed-electrical installations) or IEC 60730 (Automatic electrical controls).
The standard does not include requirements for safety isolating switches and does not apply to certain switches already covered by other existing standards. There are notes provided within the standard that highlight additional requirements that may be necessary for switches used in tropical climates, as well as the fact that end product standards for appliances may have their own specific requirements for switches. Furthermore, note 4 clarifies that the term "earthing" used in the standard refers to "bonding."
