Standard for Electric Sign Components
Also Known As:
UL 879:2019 is a standard that specifies the requirements for electric sign components used in signs and outline lighting systems. These components are intended to be installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70). The standard covers various types of illumination, including fluorescent lighting, high intensity discharge (HID) lighting, neon lighting, cold cathode lighting, light emitting diodes (LED), and electroluminescent lighting.
Examples of components covered by this standard include materials used in signs and outline lighting, such as structural panels, switch enclosures, sign frames, and electrical enclosures. It also includes electrical components related to illumination circuits operating at 1000V and above, such as lampholders, neon electrode enclosures, and insulating devices. Additionally, electromechanical and electronic equipment for use in signs, such as LED units, sign flashers, and scrolling units, are covered by the standard.
However, this standard does not cover components that are already covered by another standard, unless there are additional considerations specific to their use in signs and outline lighting. Furthermore, the standard specifically excludes various types of lighting devices and luminaires such as decorative lighting devices, exit lighting and luminaires, fluorescent ballasts, incandescent luminaires, GTO cable, low voltage landscape lighting systems, and portable electric displays, among others.
