Standard for Electric Gardening Appliances
Also Known As:
The UL 82:2021 standard specifies safety requirements for cord-connected, electrically-operated gardening appliances. These appliances, which include cultivators and edger-trimmers, are rated at 250 volts or less and are intended for use in accordance with the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70).
Additionally, the standard covers battery-operated gardening appliances, which are addressed in the Battery Powered Gardening Appliances, Supplement SA of the standard. However, it does not apply to sprayers, foggers, or equipment designed for hazardous locations as defined by the National Electrical Code.
It is important to note that the standard does not cover electrically operated walk-behind lawn mowers, as these appliances are covered under UL 1447. Battery-operated ride-on lawn mowers are also not included in UL 82 and are instead covered under UL 2753.
Moreover, electrically operated hedge trimmers are not within the scope of this standard but are covered by UL 60745-2-15. Lastly, UL 82 does not address electrically operated log splitters.
