Automatic Electrical Controls - Part 1: General Requirements
Also Known As:
UL 60730-1:2021 is a standard that specifies the general requirements for automatic electrical controls used in household and similar equipment. This standard applies to controls that are powered by electricity, gas, oil, solid fuel, solar thermal energy, or a combination thereof. It is also applicable to controls used in building automation systems, commercial and industrial applications, and equipment intended for public use.
The standard covers a wide range of control devices, including those that are mechanically or electrically operated and responsive to characteristics such as temperature, pressure, time, humidity, light, electrostatic effects, flow, liquid level, current, voltage, acceleration, or combinations thereof. It also includes starting relays used to switch the starting winding of a motor.
UL 60730-1 applies to both automatic and manual controls, as well as controls that are mechanically integral with multifunctional controls having non-electrical outputs. It includes requirements for controls powered by primary or secondary batteries. The standard considers the inherent safety, operating values, operating times, and operating sequences associated with equipment safety.
It is important to note that this standard does not apply exclusively to industrial process applications unless explicitly mentioned in the relevant part or equipment standard. Additionally, the standard does not take into account the response value of an automatic action if it depends on the method of mounting the control in the equipment. The value defined in the appropriate household equipment standard or determined by the manufacturer applies in such cases.
