Standard EN SampleSealed Wire Connector Systems
Also Known As:
The UL 486D:2017 standard sets forth requirements for sealed wire connector systems used in wet or damp locations, as well as other installations where protection from direct exposure to sunlight is required. These systems include insulating caps, covers, resins, tubing, and tapes that are designed to be used with specific wire connectors.
The standard covers wire connectors intended for use with copper conductor, aluminum conductor, or both, in accordance with the National Electrical Code, the Canadian Electrical Code, and NOM 001 SEDE. It should be noted that unless marked for the purpose, these wire connector systems have not been evaluated for direct exposure to sunlight, and additional considerations should be made for UV exposure.
The standard also applies to sealed wire connector systems intended for use with various types of cables, such as underground feeder cable, golf course sprinkler cable, underground low energy cable, irrigation cable, or other cables with insulation suitable for direct burial, below grade use, or wet locations.
The requirements of the standard apply to sealed wire connector systems designed for 30 AWG through 2,000 kcmil conductors, with currents not exceeding the ampacity of insulated conductors rated either 75°C or 90°C and intended for use at 1500V or less.
It is important to note that the standard does not apply to twist-on style splicing sealed wire connectors.
