Standard EN SampleLithium Batteries
Also Known As:
UL 1642:2020 standard covers the requirements for both primary (nonrechargeable) and secondary (rechargeable) lithium batteries used as power sources in various products. These batteries may contain metallic lithium, a lithium alloy, or a lithium ion, and can consist of a single electrochemical cell or multiple cells connected in series, parallel, or both. The conversion of chemical energy into electrical energy is achieved through irreversible or reversible chemical reactions.
The standard specifically focuses on lithium batteries intended for use in technician-replaceable or user-replaceable applications. Its main objective is to minimize the risk of fire or explosion when these batteries are used in products. However, it is important to note that the acceptability of the batteries is ultimately determined based on their use in a complete product that adheres to the relevant requirements.
Additionally, the standard aims to reduce the risk of injury to individuals caused by fire or explosion when user-replaceable lithium batteries are removed from a product and disposed of. It covers both technician-replaceable batteries containing 5.0 g or less of metallic lithium and user-replaceable batteries containing 4.0 g or less of metallic lithium with no more than 1.0 g in each electrochemical cell.
However, it is important to note that this standard does not address the toxicity risk from ingesting a lithium battery or its contents, nor does it cover the risk of injury that may arise if a battery is cut open to access the metallic lithium. These aspects fall outside the scope of UL 1642:2020.
