Standard EN SampleElectrical Cables for Boats
Also Known As:
UL 1426:2020 is a standard that specifies the requirements for electrical cables used in boats. These cables are specifically designed for use in marine pleasure craft. The standard covers both single insulated conductor cables without a jacket, as well as cables with two or more insulated conductors, with or without a nonmetallic jacket.
Boat cables are rated for different voltage and temperature conditions. The voltage rating is 600V, and the temperature rating can be either 60°C, 75°C, 90°C, or 105°C in dry conditions, and 60°C, 75°C, 90°C in wet conditions. In addition, there are dry-rated cables available with higher temperature ratings of 125°C or 200°C. The cables have stranded copper conductors, with sizes ranging from 18 to 4/0 AWG for multiple conductors and 16 to 4/0 AWG for single conductors.
The ampacity, which is the maximum current-carrying capacity, of a boat cable is determined based on the US Coast Guard regulations as mentioned in the standard. These regulations can be found in Title 33, Chapter I, Parts 183.430 and 183.435 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
