UL 1261:2017 is a standard that specifies requirements for electric water heaters used in pools and tubs. The standard applies to permanently installed heaters that have a voltage rating of 600 volts or less. These heaters are designed to heat the water supplied through plumbing to public or private pools or tubs where swimming, wading, bathing, or immersion of persons may occur. The standard covers heaters that may or may not be used with external water circulating equipment. Installation of such heaters must comply with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70.
It is important to note that UL 1261:2017 does not cover household storage tank water heaters or any other equipment that is covered by separate requirements.
