UL 414:2020 is the standard for Meter Sockets. This standard covers the requirements for meter sockets used with watthour and similar meters, test switches, metering transformer cabinets, and metering transformer cabinet interiors. These meter sockets are intended for installation in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70).

Meter sockets are marked with a continuous duty ampere rating and may also have a maximum use (intermittent) ampere rating of 125 percent or less of the continuous duty ampere rating. They are an assembly of wiring terminals and jaw-type contacts for one or more plug-in watthour meters in an enclosure that has provisions for securing the meter to the socket.

Some meter sockets may be housed in metal pedestal enclosures or metal post enclosures, which can be mounted on a concrete slab or sunk into the ground. However, these enclosures are not intended to be the sole support for overhead wiring masts. Additionally, some meter sockets may be designed for mounting on a post or pedestal for distribution equipment.

Meter sockets do not include a meter, overcurrent device, instrument transformer, arcing or switching part, or any similar component. They also do not have provisions for the installation of instrument transformers within the meter socket enclosure.

The standard covers meter sockets rated 300 volts alternating current or less, or 600 volts alternating current, with a maximum of 400 amperes per meter position. It also covers metering transformer cabinets and metering transformer cabinet interiors rated up to a maximum of 6000 amperes at 600 volts. However, current transformers are not included in the requirements for metering transformer cabinets or metering transformer cabinet interiors.

Furthermore, the standard includes additional requirements in Supplement SA that pertain to meter socket adapters. These adapters may have provisions for connection of alternative energy sources and may contain overcurrent protection.
