Standard for Electric Heating Appliances
Also Known As:
The UL 499:2021 standard provides requirements for heating appliances rated at 600 V or less that are intended for use in unclassified locations in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), ANSI/NFPA 70. These requirements do not cover electric heating equipment or appliances that have separate individual requirements outside of this standard.
The standard defines a heating appliance as an electrically energized product that directly or indirectly generates heat to perform its intended function. It also covers electrically energized products that generate steam for purposes other than space heating and have an electrical power rating of 15 kW or less per steam generating vessel. However, steam generating products with an electrical input power rating exceeding 15 kW per steam generating vessel are evaluated under the requirements of the Standard for Heating, Water Supply, and Power Boilers – Electric, UL 834.
In the case of multi-vessel units, each steam generating vessel within the unit must comply with these requirements, and the unit should bear the appropriate marking as specified by the standard.
