UL 514D:2020 is a standard that specifically addresses the requirements for metallic and nonmetallic cover plates and their associated gaskets for flush-mounted wiring devices. The standard applies to these cover plates and gaskets that are intended for installation in accordance with the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70) and the Canadian Electrical Code (Part I, CSA C22.1, General Requirements).

In addition to flush-mounted wiring devices, UL 514D also covers outlet box hoods that may or may not be integral with a cover plate. The standard extends its scope to include cover plates intended for use in marine applications. The marine applications must adhere to the relevant requirements of the United States Coast Guard, the Canadian Coast Guard, IEEE 45 (Recommended Practice for Electrical Installation on Shipboard), the American Boat and Yacht Council, and NFPA 302 (Standard for Pleasure and Commercial Motor Craft).

However, it is important to note that UL 514D does not apply to telephone wall plates. Additionally, the standard does not cover cover plates and associated gaskets intended for use in hazardous (classified) locations as defined by the National Electrical Code and the Canadian Electrical Code.
