UL 60335-2-89:2021 is a standard that specifies safety requirements for commercial refrigerating appliances and ice-makers with an incorporated or remote refrigerant unit or motor-compressor. The standard applies to electrically operated appliances that are used in commercial settings. It covers a wide range of appliances such as refrigerated display and storage cabinets, refrigerated trolley cabinets, service counters and self-service counters, blast chillers and blast freezers, and commercial ice-makers.
The standard aims to address the common hazards associated with these appliances, including those that use flammable refrigerants and R-744 refrigerant. However, it excludes appliances with a mass of flammable refrigerant exceeding certain limits and appliances that use refrigerants with a toxicity classification of B.
UL 60335-2-89:2021 does not cover the features of construction and operation that are addressed in ISO standards. It also states that additional requirements may be necessary for appliances intended for use in vehicles, ships, aircraft, or as specified by national health authorities, labor protection authorities, water supply authorities, and similar authorities in different countries.
The standard provides modifications and notes to clarify certain aspects. These include specifying additional requirements for specific types of appliances, excluding certain types of appliances from the scope, and clarifying the applicability of the standard to different refrigerants and refrigeration systems.
