Adjustable Speed Electrical Power Drive Systems - Part 5-1: Safety Requirements - Electrical, Thermal and Energy
Also Known As:
UL 61800-5-1:2021 is a standard that specifies the safety requirements for adjustable speed power drive systems. These requirements cover electrical, thermal, and energy considerations. The standard applies to adjustable speed electric drive systems that consist of power conversion, drive control, and motor elements.
However, it excludes traction and electric vehicle drives. The scope of the standard includes both DC drive systems connected to line voltages up to 1 kV AC, 50 Hz or 60 Hz, and AC drive systems with converter input voltages up to 35 kV, 50 Hz or 60 Hz, and output voltages up to 35 kV.
It is important to note that this part of the standard does not cover the driven equipment itself, except for interface requirements. It also specifies that devices used as component parts of a power drive system must comply with the safety requirements of relevant product standards for the same environment. Additionally, the standard acknowledges that special components and/or additional measures may be required to meet safety requirements.
The standard includes modifications, such as specifying that it is applicable to power conversion and drive control equipment, servo drives, and integral servo drive/motor combinations. It also mentions that the standard applies to drives with an input rating up to and including 1.5 kV AC or DC.
Furthermore, the scope now includes BDM/CDM/PDS intended for connection to photovoltaic (PV) modules with output voltages not exceeding 1.5 kV DC. The standard clarifies that the equipment covered by it is suitable for use in ordinary locations according to the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. It also states that specifications provided in other parts of the 61800 Series of Standards, such as EMC requirements, only apply upon agreement between the manufacturer and the customer.
