Power Converters for use in Photovoltaic Power Systems - Part 1: General Requirements
Also Known As:
The UL 62109-1:2019 standard establishes the minimum safety requirements for power conversion equipment (PCE) used in photovoltaic (PV) systems. It covers the design and manufacture of PCE to ensure protection against electric shock, energy, fire, mechanical, and other hazards.
This standard applies to all types of PV PCE and includes equipment connected to systems with a maximum PV source circuit voltage of 1,500 V DC. The equipment may also be connected to systems with a maximum AC voltage of 1,000 V at the AC mains circuits, non-mains AC load circuits, and other DC source or load circuits such as batteries. The standard also encompasses the evaluation of all features and functions incorporated in or available for the PCE that could affect compliance with the requirements.
It's important to note that this standard specifically addresses PV systems and does not include characteristics of power sources other than photovoltaic systems, such as wind turbines or fuel cells. Additionally, the standard does not cover equipment meant for use in explosive atmospheres, aircraft, marine installations, electromedical applications, or elevations above 2,000 m. However, adjustments for clearance distances at higher elevations are considered.
The objective of this standard is to ensure that adequate protection is provided for operators and the surrounding area from various hazards, including electric shock, mechanical hazards, excessive temperature, spread of fire, chemical hazards, sonic pressure hazards, and liberated fluids, gases, and explosion hazards. However, the standard only provides limited requirements to protect service personnel from hazards that may not be apparent, as it assumes that servicing personnel possess the necessary knowledge and skills.
While this standard does not cover aspects such as functional reliability, performance, transport packaging effectiveness, EMC requirements, or installation requirements (which are covered by local and national codes), it does provide requirements for safe installation, including installation instructions provided with the product.
