These devices are designed for various purposes including self-limiting devices such as heaters, control devices like current limiters and inrush-current limiters, and sensing devices. The standard covers both positive temperature coefficient (PTC) and negative temperature coefficient (NTC) types of thermistors.

It is important to note that control devices, such as current limiters, are not meant to replace current interrupting devices like fuses but rather provide an additional level of overcurrent protection in compliance with the requirements of the end-use equipment. The standard specifically excludes heating cables constructed with thermistor-type material, such as self-regulating pipe heating cables.
