Electric Clothes Dryers
Also Known As:
The UL 2158:2021 standard applies to electric clothes dryers that are intended to be used in nonhazardous locations and comply with the relevant electrical codes in Canada (CE Code, Part I) and the United States (NEC). The standard covers appliances with a nominal voltage not exceeding 600 V.
The standard applies to both cord-connected and permanently connected electric clothes dryers. It encompasses appliances used by the general public, including those in households and commercial settings such as coin-operated facilities, laundry centers, and combination washer-dryers.
The standard covers different types of clothes dryers, including tumbling clothes dryers and non-tumbling clothes dryers such as drying cabinets. It also includes both vented clothes dryers and non-vented clothes dryers such as condensation-type and heat pump clothes dryers. Specific requirements for heat pump clothes dryers are provided in Supplement SD.
However, the standard does not apply to industrial and institutional type appliances. These appliances fall under the scope of UL 1240, which covers electric commercial clothes-drying equipment. Industrial and institutional appliances are designed for use by trained or supervised personnel and not intended for general public use.
