Standard EN SampleBatteries for Use in Electric Vehicles
Also Known As: ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC 2580:2021
UL 2580:2021 is a standard that specifically addresses the requirements for electrical energy storage assemblies used in electric-powered vehicles. These assemblies include battery packs, combination battery pack-electrochemical capacitor assemblies, and the subassembly/modules that make up these assemblies. The standard aims to evaluate the ability of these energy storage assemblies to safely withstand simulated abuse conditions and prevent any exposure of individuals to hazards resulting from such abuse.
The evaluation process takes into consideration the manufacturer's specified charge and discharge parameters at specified temperatures. However, it does not assess the interaction between the assembly and other control systems within the vehicle. It is important to note that this standard does not evaluate the performance or reliability of these devices, focusing primarily on safety aspects.
Furthermore, it is crucial to understand that UL 2580:2021 does not include requirements for the evaluation of batteries intended for light electric vehicles like electrical assist bicycles, wheelchairs, electric scooters, and similar devices. Evaluations for these types of batteries are covered under the UL/ULC 2271 standard.
