UL 810:2019 PDF Download

The UL 810:2019 standard establishes requirements for enclosed capacitors with integral protection. These requirements aim to reduce the risk of rupture and venting of the capacitor enclosure during internal fault conditions. The standard applies to capacitors used in appliances, lighting equipment, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, motors, and similar applications with ratings up to 5 kV for expansion type protection and up to 2 kV for segmented film type protection.

In addition, the standard can also be used to evaluate the construction of capacitors with ratings greater than those mentioned above, but not exceeding 7.2 kV. Capacitors with polymeric enclosures or partial metallic enclosures, which do not require internal protection and are intended for circuits without fault current protection, can be evaluated based on the construction requirements of the standard.

Furthermore, the standard includes requirements for general-use power-factor-correction units, consisting of one or more capacitors within a protective enclosure. These units, rated up to 600 V, are intended for power-factor correction of circuits according to the National Electrical Code. However, the standard does not apply to power factor correction units containing automatic systems or control features. Such units should be evaluated based on the Standard for Industrial Control Panels (UL 508A).

The standard also covers electrolytic capacitors for motor start or similar applications, including DC circuits rated up to 600 V, with additional requirements outlined in Supplement SA. It specifies that compliant capacitors should be mounted within appliances or equipment that provide an acceptable outer enclosure.

However, it's important to note that the UL 810:2019 standard does not apply to capacitors covered by the Standard for Fixed Capacitors for Use in Electronic Equipment – Part 14: Sectional Specification: Fixed Capacitors for Electromagnetic Interference Suppression and Connection to the Supply Mains (UL 60384-14).
