Standard EN SampleStandard for Vertical-Tray Fire-Propagation and Smoke-Release Test for Electrical and Optical-Fiber Cables
Also Known As:
The UL 1685:2020 standard defines a testing procedure for evaluating the flame propagation and smoke release characteristics of electrical and optical-fiber cables when exposed to a flaming ignition source.
The purpose of this test is to determine if the cables meet specific criteria to qualify for the limited smoke marking. These criteria include a cable char height of less than 8 ft, 0 inch (244 cm) measured from the bottom of the cable tray, total smoke release of 95 m² or less, and a peak smoke release rate of 0.25 m²/s or less.
It is important to note that this test does not assess the toxicity of the products of combustion or decomposition, and it does not address the constructional or performance requirements of the cables, such as their electrical or optical properties.
