UL 1673:2011 is a standard that applies to electric space heating cables intended for space heating purposes. These cables are rated for 480 V or less and are installed in unclassified locations in accordance with Article 424 Part V of the National Electrical Code (NEC). The standard specifically applies to space heating cables that are installed in ceilings of enclosed structures or within or beneath floors constructed of noncombustible material, concrete, or asphalt.

It is important to note that this standard does not cover electric heating equipment or appliances that are covered by separate individual requirements. The standard also includes a list of related standards that cover different types of electric heating equipment and appliances such as heat tracing for commercial and industrial applications, movable and wall or ceiling-hung electric room heaters, and roof and gutter de-icing cable units.

The standard also specifies what is excluded from its scope, such as heating cables intended to be installed in dropped or suspended ceilings, heating cables connected to the supply by a flexible cord with attachment plug, and heating cable equipment that is movable after installation. Additionally, the standard does not cover switches, transformers, power supplies, controls, or protective devices that are typically installed separate from the space heating cables but may be a part of the space heating system. These devices are covered by separate individual requirements.
