Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-40: Particular Requirements for Electrical Heat Pumps, Air-Conditioners and Dehumidifiers
Also Known As:
UL 60335-2-40:2019 is a standard that focuses on the safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances such as electric heat pumps, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers. These appliances incorporate motor-compressors and hydronic fan coil units, with maximum rated voltages of 250 V for single phase appliances and 600 V for other appliances.
This standard also covers partial units and appliances intended for use in shops, light industry, and farms that can pose a danger to the public. It takes into account the use of flammable refrigerants, specifying particular requirements for their use. However, it only considers refrigerants classified as A1, A2L, A2, and A3 according to ISO 817.
The standard includes references to other relevant safety requirements for refrigerating systems and heat pumps, such as ISO 5149-1, ISO 5149-2, and ISO 5149-3. It also addresses the use of supplementary heaters designed as part of the appliance package.
It should be noted that this standard does not apply to humidifiers used with heating and cooling equipment, appliances designed exclusively for industrial processing, or appliances intended for use in locations with special conditions like corrosive or explosive atmospheres.
The standard also includes modifications and clarifications related to the safety requirements for electric heat pumps and refrigerants. These modifications update the maximum rated voltages, define the allowable refrigerant safety groups, and provide references to applicable standards.
