Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear - Controllers for Drivers of Stationary Fire Pumps
Also Known As:
UL 62091:2020 is a standard that applies to controllers used for starting, controlling, and stopping stationary fire pumps. It covers both automatic and non-automatic controllers for electric motor or diesel engine-driven fire pumps. The standard specifies the unique characteristics and operational functions of fire pump controllers, as well as the tests and test methods for confirming that these conditions have been met. It also outlines the information that should be provided with the equipment or in the manufacturer's literature.
The standard addresses controllers for both electric motor-driven and diesel engine-driven fire pumps. Controllers for electric motor-driven fire pumps include short-circuit protection and may also include an integral power transfer switch. These controllers are rated up to 1,000 V AC. Controllers for diesel engine-driven fire pumps include circuits for various control and supervisory functions such as remote control, alarms, indicators, and battery chargers.
It's important to note that this standard does not apply to special applications such as explosive atmospheres, nuclear installations, ships, aircraft, etc. It also does not cover the method or means of electrical energy generation. Additionally, the installation between the origin of the installation and the fire pump controller is not covered by this standard, as it is addressed in the IEC 60364 series.
The standard also includes modifications to Clause 1, which specify additional requirements for the equipment. These include provisions for limited service and medium voltage controllers, controllers for different types of motors (squirrel cage or wound rotor motors), variable speed controllers, and residential fire pump controllers for single-phase motors. The standard also covers diesel engine fire pump controllers, including those rated for nominal 24 V DC or less, and automatic transfer switches used in fire pump circuits.
