Standard EN SampleAdjustable Speed Electrical Power Drive Systems - Part 5-2: Safety Requirements - Functional
Also Known As:
UL 61800-5-2:2020 is a standard that specifies requirements and recommendations for the design, development, integration, and validation of adjustable speed electrical power drive systems (PDS(SR)s) in terms of their functional safety considerations. It applies to PDS(SR)s that are covered by other parts of the IEC 61800 series of standards. This standard is specifically applicable to PDS(SR)s that operate in high demand or continuous mode. For low demand applications, IEC 61508 should be consulted.
The purpose of this standard is to facilitate the realization of the electrical/electronic/programmable electronic (E/E/PE) elements of a PDS(SR) in relation to the safety performance of safety functions. It aims to provide manufacturers and suppliers of PDS(SR)s with normative requirements that indicate the safety performance of their equipment. This enables the incorporation of a PDS(SR) into a safety-related control system using the principles of IEC 61508 and possible specific sector implementations.
It is important to note that this standard does not specify requirements for hazard and risk analysis, identification of safety functions, initial allocation of SILs, driven equipment (except for interface arrangements), secondary hazards, electrical, thermal, and energy safety considerations (covered in IEC 61800-5-1), PDS(SR) manufacturing process, or the validity of signals and commands. The functional safety requirements of a PDS(SR) depend on the application and must be considered as part of the overall risk assessment by the installation designer.
Furthermore, this standard only applies to PDS(SR)s implementing safety functions with a SIL not greater than SIL 3. It is important to refer to this standard for power conversion and drive control equipment, servo drives, and integral servo drive/motor combinations connected to line voltages up to 1.5 kV AC. The standard covers the use of this equipment in ordinary locations as per the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70). Electrical, thermal, and energy safety considerations are covered in UL 61800-5-1 or UL 508C standards. Figure 1 provides a logical representation of a PDS(SR) in terms of its functional elements.
