Standard EN SampleRecommended Practice for Installing Energy Storage Systems (ESS)
Also Known As: NECA NEIS 416:2016
The NECA 416:2016 standard provides guidelines for the installation of various energy storage systems (ESS) such as battery systems, flywheels, ultra-capacitors, and smart chargers used for electric vehicle (EV) vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications.
The standard includes recommendations for the installation of electrical equipment and components in ESS, but excludes systems like Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS), Thermal Energy Storage (TES), hydrogen storage, and Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) due to their specific characteristics and separate installation requirements.
The standard emphasizes compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and other applicable state and local codes, as well as manufacturer's instructions and contract documents. It states that only qualified individuals familiar with the construction and installation of ESS and their components should perform the technical work, while administrative functions may be performed under supervision. Electrical safety in the workplace should also be followed according to the NFPA 70E standard.
Additionally, the standard provides definitions for different types of requirements, such as mandatory requirements that must be followed, permissive requirements that are optional but allowed, quality and performance recommendations for improving installation quality, and explanatory material that further expands on the requirements.
The standard also includes informative annexes that provide non-mandatory information and reference standards or documents related to the application and use of materials, equipment, and systems covered by the Recommended Practice. These annexes are included for informational purposes.
