Standard EN SampleSecondary Cells and Batteries Containing Alkaline or Other Non-Acid Electrolytes - Secondary Lithium Cells and Batteries for Portable Applications
Also Known As:
The JIS C 8711:2019 standard specifies the requirements for secondary lithium cells and batteries for portable applications. The objective of this standard is to provide purchasers and users with a set of criteria to evaluate the performance of secondary lithium cells and batteries from different manufacturers. Portable applications include hand-held equipment, transportable equipment, and movable equipment. Examples of portable applications include smartphones, tablet PCs, audio/video players, notebook computers, CD players, power tools, and power-assisted cycles.
The standard excludes applications using batteries with nominal voltages equal to or higher than 60 V DC, electrical energy storage systems (EESS) and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) that use batteries over 500 Wh, and self-propelled vehicles. It defines a minimum required level of performance and a standardized testing methodology to report the results to the user. This allows users to assess the suitability of commercially available secondary lithium cells and batteries for their intended application.
Safety is emphasized, and end users should only handle batteries that meet the requirements of this standard and other safety-related standards. The standard also mentions that secondary lithium cells and batteries have different voltage ranges, nominal voltages, and final voltages during discharge, depending on their chemistries. Users are advised to consult the manufacturer for specific specifications when necessary.
The corresponding international standard is IEC 61960-3:2017, which covers prismatic and cylindrical lithium secondary cells and batteries for portable applications.
