JIS C 8715-1:2018 is a standard that specifies the performance requirements and marking for lithium secondary cells and batteries used in industrial applications, including both stationary and mobile use. The standard is applicable to various industrial applications such as telecom, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), electrical energy storage systems, utility switching, emergency power, forklift trucks, golf carts, automated guided vehicles (AGV), railway, and marine applications (excluding road vehicles).

The standard is complementary to other JIS or IEC standards that specify test conditions and requirements for cells used in special applications. If there is a conflict between this standard and another standard, the latter takes precedence. This standard focuses on the common and minimum requirements for various industrial applications, while specific performance requirements for portable devices are covered in JIS C 8711.

The standard applies to both cells and batteries. If a battery is divided into smaller units, one of the smaller units may be tested as a representative of the entire battery, as long as the manufacturer clearly declares the tested unit. The standard does not cover the safety requirements for these secondary lithium cells and batteries, which are specified in JIS C 8715-2.
