The ISA 60079-11 (12.02.01)-2014 standard provides guidelines for the construction and testing of intrinsically safe apparatus intended for use in explosive atmospheres. This standard specifically addresses electrical equipment in which the electrical circuits themselves are incapable of causing an explosion in the surrounding explosive atmospheres. It also covers associated apparatus that is intended for connection to intrinsically safe circuits in such environments.

The standard is applicable to electrical equipment or parts located both inside and outside the explosive atmosphere. For equipment located outside the explosive atmosphere, but connected to intrinsically safe circuits in such areas, the intrinsic safety of the electrical circuits may depend on the design and construction of the equipment. In such cases, the electrical circuits exposed to the explosive atmosphere are evaluated for use in that environment according to this standard.

This standard supplements and modifies the general requirements of ANSI/ISA-60079-0 IEC 60079-0, with some exceptions as indicated in Table 1. In case of conflicts between the requirements of this standard and ANSI/ISA-60079-0 IEC 60079-0, the requirements of ISA 60079-11 take precedence. The standard also references ISA-60079-25 IEC 60079-25 for the requirements of intrinsically safe systems.

It is important to note that this standard is applicable to electrical equipment only. If associated apparatus is placed in the explosive atmosphere, it must be protected by an appropriate Type of Protection listed in ANSI/ISA-60079-0 IEC 60079-0, and the relevant parts of that standard also apply to the associated apparatus.
