Standard EN SampleAlarm Identification and Rationalization
Also Known As:
ISA TR18.2.2-2016 standard provides guidance, rationale, and examples to support the ANSI/ISA-18.2-2016 standard, which focuses on the management of alarm systems in process industries.
The standard defines two key stages in the alarm lifecycle: Identification and Rationalization. In the Identification stage, various methods are used to determine the possible need for alarms or changes to existing alarms. This stage serves as the input point in the alarm lifecycle, where recommended alarms or alarm changes are identified for further evaluation.
The Rationalization stage involves several activities, including alarm justification, documentation, prioritization, and classification. During justification, existing or potential alarms are evaluated against criteria outlined in the alarm philosophy. If an alarm meets the criteria, its type, setpoint, cause, consequence, and operator action are documented. The alarm is then prioritized and classified based on the philosophy, which involves assigning it to a specific group or class with certain administrative requirements.
ISA TR18.2.2-2016 standard applies to facilities in the process industries and aims to improve safety, environmental protection, product quality, equipment protection, and plant productivity. It is applicable to a range of processes, including batch, discrete, and continuous processes.
