IEEE Guide for Maintenance Methods on Energized Power Lines
Also Known As: IEEE Std 516-2021
The IEEE 516-2021 standard provides general recommendations for performing maintenance work on energized power lines. The guide includes technical explanations related to laboratory testing of tools and equipment, in-service inspection, field maintenance and care of tools and equipment, and work methods for the maintenance of energized lines.
The purpose of this guide is threefold. First, it aims to present sufficient details on methods and equipment currently used to enable the performance of energized line maintenance with maximum safety. Second, it directs attention to appropriate standards and other documents for the acquisition of knowledge on the inspection, care, and use of required tools and equipment. Finally, it provides guidance for establishing an appropriate work area, considering safety and the physical effects of the work area on personnel.
It is important to note that this guide does not replace proven utility practices or imply that its recommendations are superior to existing practices. Instead, it serves as a compilation of accepted practices to be used as a guide by electric utilities and agencies seeking guidance in establishing methods and procedures for the maintenance of energized power lines.
