Explosive Atmospheres - Part 17: Electrical Installations Inspection and Maintenance
Also Known As:
IEC 60079-17:2007 is a standard that specifically focuses on the inspection and maintenance of electrical installations in environments with explosive atmospheres. This standard is applicable to users and deals with factors directly related to the safe operation of electrical installations in hazardous areas where the hazard may be caused by flammable gases, vapours, mists, dusts, fibres, or flyings.
It should be noted that this standard does not apply to underground mining areas, areas with hybrid mixtures, dusts of explosives that do not require atmospheric oxygen for combustion, or pyrophoric substances. The standard outlines the requirements and guidelines for inspection and maintenance activities, ensuring that electrical installations within hazardous areas are regularly checked and properly maintained.
One significant improvement in the 2007 edition of the standard is the introduction of additional requirements for the inspection and maintenance of electrical installations for combustible dusts. Furthermore, it introduces the concept of Equipment Protection Levels (EPLs) and provides explanations of these levels in the new Annex C. These updates aim to enhance the safety and effectiveness of electrical installations within explosive atmospheres.
