Live working - Voltage detectors - Part 1: Capacitive type to be used for voltages exceeding 1 kV AC
Also Known As:
IEC 61243-1:2021 is a standard that pertains to voltage detectors used for live working on electrical systems with voltages exceeding 1 kV AC. It specifically focuses on capacitive type voltage detectors that are portable and may or may not have built-in power sources. The standard covers a wide voltage range from 1 kV to 800 kV AC with frequencies of 50 Hz and/or 60 Hz.
The standard applies to voltage detectors that are in direct contact with the bare part to be tested. This can either be as a complete device with its insulating element or as a separate device that can be attached to an insulating stick. Other types of voltage detectors and self-ranging voltage detectors are not covered by this standard.
Certain restrictions and prohibitions are applicable for the use of these voltage detectors in specific situations such as switchgear of IEC 62271 series design, overhead line systems of electrified railways, and systems without neutral reference. The standard emphasizes that proper training and adherence to the hot stick working method and instructions for use are crucial for ensuring the safety of users.
The third edition of the standard, published in 2021, introduces several technical changes compared to the previous edition. These changes include a more precise scope that emphasizes reliable contact with the part to be tested, the introduction of a contact probe as a new type of non-conductive contact electrode, the inclusion of requirements and tests for an exclusively outdoor type of voltage detector, allowance for a selector for voltage and frequency under certain conditions, more precise marking for voltage detectors with low interference voltage, and the implementation of requirements and tests for electromagnetic compatibility.
