IEC 61439-2:2020 is a standard that defines the specific requirements for power switchgear and controlgear assemblies. These assemblies are designed for applications where the rated voltage does not exceed 1,000V AC or 1,500V DC, and the nominal frequency of the incoming supply does not exceed 1,000 Hz. The standard covers both indoor and outdoor assemblies, which can be stationary or movable, with or without enclosures.
The assemblies are intended to be used in connection with the generation, transmission, distribution, and conversion of electrical energy, as well as for controlling equipment that consumes electrical energy and for associated data processing. They can be used under special service conditions, such as in ships and rail vehicles, as long as other relevant specific requirements are met.
The third edition of this standard, published in 2020, includes several significant technical changes compared to the previous edition. These changes include the addition of new annexes for assemblies used in photovoltaic installations, clarification of requirements for forms of internal separation, alignment with the structure of IEC 61439-1:2020, and the addition of temperature-rise verification for assemblies with natural cooling and circuits rated above 1,600A. Additionally, the standard considers IP (International Protection) with active cooling.
