The second edition of this standard, published in 2017, is a technical revision that supersedes the first edition from 2007 and its Amendment 1:2011. Some of the key changes in this edition include renumbering in accordance with ISO/IEC directives and the adoption of specifications from IEC 60071-2:1996 for altitude correction factors above 1,000 m.

Furthermore, changes have been made to various sections of the standard. For example, the normal service conditions for indoor and outdoor switchgear have been defined within specific temperature ranges. Additionally, updates have been made to the rated voltage for certain equipment, the inclusion of new subclauses for manual operated actuators, and adjustments to requirements for radio interference voltage and temperature rise allowances.

Certain tests have been removed from the standard due to modifications or withdrawals of their relevant test standards, while acceptance criteria for X-radiation testing have been modified to account for higher rated vacuum interrupters. The standard also includes informative annexes addressing corrosion, guidelines for extending the validity of type tests, and guidelines for exposure to pollution.
