IEC 62271-4:2022 is a standard that provides guidelines and requirements for handling gases used for insulation and/or switching in high-voltage switchgear and controlgear. The standard covers various procedures related to the handling of these gases, including installation, commissioning, repair, overhaul, normal and abnormal operations, and disposal at the end-of-life of the equipment.

The purpose of the standard is to ensure the reliability of electric power equipment, the safety of personnel working with these gases, and to minimize the impact on the environment. It sets out the minimum requirements that should be followed, but manufacturers may also provide additional requirements in their operating instruction manuals.

This second edition of the standard replaces the previous edition published in 2013 and includes several technical revisions. The title of the standard has been modified, and procedures for handling alternatives to SF6 gas, which is commonly used for insulation and switching, have been added. The main clauses of the standard are now independent of the type of gas used. Additionally, the specific information, handling procedures, safety measures, etc., for each gas are provided in separate annexes.

It is worth noting that some information related to SF6 gas, such as environmental effects and by-products, has been moved to other standards (IEC 60376 and IEC 60480) in this edition, thereby streamlining the content of IEC 62271-4:2022.
