Standard EN SampleOptical Fiber Outside Plant Communications Cable
Also Known As:
ICEA S-87-640:2006 is a standard that covers optical fiber outside plant communications cable. This standard specifies the requirements for the materials, constructions, and performance of the cables, as well as the applicable test procedures. The cables covered by this standard are intended for outdoor use and can be installed aerially, directly buried, or placed in underground ducts.
The standard also includes additional requirements for "figure-8" aerial self-supporting cables in Annex D. The cables covered by this standard are designed to convey communication signals (voice, video, and data) from point-to-point or point-to-multi-point external to buildings. They can be factory terminated with connectors or splicing modules.
The standard provides temperature ranges for the cables, with Annex C addressing very-low temperature applications. It also specifies the tensile rating for the cables, with a standard installation tensile rating of 2670 N (600 lbf). However, higher or lower tensile ratings can also be acceptable depending on the application. The residual load, defined as any load less than or equal to 30% of the installation tensile rating, is also considered.
Minimum bend diameter requirements are provided for the cables, with the standard specifying a minimum bend diameter of 20 times the cable outer diameter for residual (installed) conditions and 40 times the cable outer diameter for loaded conditions during installation. However, for very small cables installed in miniature ducts, manufacturers may specify a fixed cable minimum bend diameter that is independent of the cable outer diameter. For cables with non-circular cross-sections, the bend diameter requirements are determined using the thickness (minor axis) as the cable and bending in the direction of the preferential bend.
