Optical Fiber Outside Plant Communications Cable
Also Known As:
The ICEA S-87-640:2016 standard focuses on optical fiber communications cables designed for outdoor use, specifically for aerial installation, direct burial, or underground duct placement. The standard includes requirements for materials, constructions, and performance, along with applicable test procedures. Additionally, Annex D and Annex F provide specific requirements for "figure-8" aerial self-supporting cables and all-dielectric self-support cables, respectively.
The standard highlights that these cables are intended for use in communication systems, conveying signals such as voice, video, and data from point-to-point or point-to-multi-point, external to buildings. The cables may come factory terminated with connectors or splicing modules.
For hybrid cables, which combine optical fiber with metallic conductors, the applicable metallic conductor requirements should be determined through agreement between the end user and the cable manufacturer. It is also recommended to consider the requirements of ANSI/ICEA S-84-608 for appropriate specifications.
