Explosive Atmospheres - Part 11: Equipment Protection by Intrinsic Safety "i"
Also Known As:
The CAN/CSA-C22.2 NO. 60079-11:14 (R2018) standard is an adoption of the IEC Standard 60079-11, with Canadian deviations. It supersedes the previous edition published in 2011 and is part of a series of Standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code.
The standard specifies the construction and testing of intrinsically safe apparatus intended for use in explosive atmospheres. It also covers associated apparatus that is intended for connection to intrinsically safe circuits entering such atmospheres. The main purpose of this type of protection is to ensure that electrical equipment's circuits themselves are incapable of causing an explosion in the surrounding explosive atmospheres.
The standard also applies to electrical equipment located outside the explosive atmosphere or protected by another Type of Protection listed in IEC 60079-0, where the intrinsic safety of the electrical circuits in the explosive atmosphere may depend on the design and construction of such equipment. The electrical circuits exposed to the explosive atmosphere are evaluated for use in such an atmosphere based on the requirements of this standard.
It should be noted that this standard supplements and modifies the general requirements of IEC 60079-0, except where conflicts arise. In case of conflicts, the requirements of CAN/CSA-C22.2 NO. 60079-11:14 take precedence. The standard applies to electrical equipment only, and the term "equipment" used in the standard specifically refers to electrical equipment. Associated apparatus placed in the explosive atmosphere must be protected by an appropriate Type of Protection listed in IEC 60079-0, and the requirements of that method of protection, along with relevant parts of IEC 60079-0, also apply to the associated apparatus.
