Also Known As:
The CAN/CSA-C22.3 NO. 8-M91 (R2003) standard provides guidelines for the design and development of railway electrification systems. It specifically applies to the overhead contact system and traction power supply to the locomotive, using a single-phase alternating supply at 25 or 50 kV nominal voltage, 60 Hz.
This standard is primarily intended for use in the development of conventional railway freight and passenger services, but it is also recommended for the development of special services, such as rapid transit, whenever possible.
The standard covers various design considerations in selected areas of railway electrification, including insulation coordination and electrical clearance, vertical and horizontal clearances, overhead contact systems, interference with railway signaling and communication circuits, utility interface unbalance and harmonics, and grounding and bonding.
However, it is important to note that this standard is not intended to be a complete guideline on railway electrification. The recommendations and comments provided in the standard do not constitute complete design or construction specifications and are for guidance purposes only. Conditions not covered by this standard may be governed by appropriate requirements or other documents in common use or as required by constituted authority.
Additionally, the standard suggests that the standards and guidelines of organizations such as the American Railway Engineering Association (AREA), the Association of American Railroads (AAR), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the Union International des Chemins de Fer (UIC) may be used in areas not covered by the CAN/CSA-C22.3 NO. 8-M91 (R2003) standard.
