BS EN 50419:2022 is a standard that outlines the requirements for marking electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in order to facilitate the separate collection of waste EEE (WEEE), thereby minimizing the disposal of unsorted waste. This is important in accordance with Article 14(4) of Directive 2012/19/EU (WEEE, recast). The marking serves two main purposes: to clearly identify the producer of the equipment and to indicate that the equipment has been put on the market after 13 August 2005, in line with Articles 12(3) and 15(2) of the same directive.

The standard applies to categories of electrical and electronic equipment that are subject to WEEE collection, treatment, recovery, and environmentally sound disposal, as defined by European and national regulations. It is worth noting that equipment falling under the scope of these regulations, but being part of another type of equipment that is exempt, is not covered by this standard. The standard specifies the marking requirements to be met for compliance with these regulations.

However, it is important to note that the standard does not cover the definition of a technical carrier medium used for machine-based identification of the producer, such as a barcode, electronic data medium, or microchip. This aspect is not within the scope of this document.
