Standard EN SampleSpecifications for the re-use of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and its mixtures in electrical equipment
Also Known As:
BS EN IEC 60480:2019 is a standard that provides specifications for the re-use of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and its mixtures in electrical equipment. It outlines criteria for the safe and environmentally friendly re-use of SF6 gas after recovery and reclaiming from electrical equipment, such as during maintenance or at the end of its life cycle.
The standard focuses on SF6 gas and its mixtures with nitrogen (N2) and carbon tetrafluoride (CF4), which are commonly used gases in electrical equipment. It does not cover the procedures for recovering and reclaiming used SF6, as these are described in another standard, IEC 62271-4.
The document includes several annexes that provide information on methods of analysis for SF6, by-products of SF6 and its mixtures, evaluating potential health effects of these by-products, cryogenic reclaiming of SF6, and reclaiming recommendations.
Storage, transportation, and disposal of SF6 and its mixtures are not covered in this standard, as they are addressed in IEC 62271-4. Procedures for determining SF6 leakages are described in IEC 60068-2-17.
This third edition of the standard replaces the previous edition published in 2004 and includes specifications for the re-use of SF6 and its mixtures. The annexes have been reorganized, and new information has been added to align with other relevant standards such as IEC 60376.
