Standard EN SampleStandard Test Methods for Hookup Wire Insulation
Also Known As:
The ASTM D3032-21a standard provides detailed procedures for testing hookup wire insulation. This standard covers all components of the insulation system used on single insulated conductors or an assembly of single insulated conductors such as a cable bundle and harness or flat ribbon cable. The insulation materials include not only the primary insulation over the conductor but also insulating jackets over shielded constructions.
The standard includes a wide range of test procedures to determine the properties of hookup wire insulation. Some of these tests include assessing axial stability (longitudinal change) after thermal exposure, measuring bondability to potting compounds, determining capacitance, conducting cold bend tests, evaluating crush resistance, measuring dielectric breakdown voltage, assessing dimensions, testing for dry-arc tracking, conducting dynamic cut-through tests, assessing fluid immersion properties, conducting high-temperature shock tests, performing insulation-continuity proof tests, measuring insulation resistance, determining partial discharge (corona) inception and extinction voltage, evaluating relative thermal life and temperature index, measuring strip force and surface resistance, conducting tensile property tests, performing vertical flame tests, determining voltage rating of hook-up wire, conducting voltage withstand tests, and assessing wet arc-tracking properties.
It is important to note that while these test methods provide valuable information about the response of materials, products, or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, this standard does not incorporate all factors required for fire hazard or fire risk assessment of the materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions. Therefore, the standard should be used in conjunction with other applicable standards and guidelines for fire safety assessments.
It is also worth noting that fire testing can be hazardous. Proper safeguards for personnel and property must be implemented when conducting these tests.
